ME/HCMC - Thu Thiem bridge spanning Sai Gon river in Ho Chi Minh City fully opened to traffic on Jan. 31, helping reduce load for Sai Gon bridge and shorten travelling time from Thu Duc district to the downtown.

The 1.25km bridge has six lanes for vehicles, linking district 2 with Binh Thanh district.

Work on the bridge, built at over 1.47 trillion VND, started in April 2005. Phase I of the project ended two years ago.

The project, including the Thu Thiem four-lane tunnel, which is 460m long and 19m wide, has helped facilitate travelling in Binh Thanh district.

Also the same day, work started on three main roads with a total length of nearly 10km in the Thu Thiem new urban centre.

The project including 10 new bridges has a total investment of 6.73 trillion VND (363 million USD).
